BQ24078: Charging an 4.2V LiPo

Hi there,

this chip has a fixed charge voltage of 4.35V. Is it possible to charge a 4.2 LiPo with this chip? Do I need to add some resistor into the battery path, so the LiPo sees only 4.2V or is it impossible to charge a 4.2 LiPo with this chip?

Hi Jonathan,

The BQ24078 is fixed for 4.35V but I have attached a table from the BQ2407x datasheet that shows the other devices in this family that fit the 4.2V requirement.

Hey Jackson,

I am aware of the other chips. But my supplier has only the BQ24078 in stock. Thus I am thinking about a solution how to use this chip for a 4.2 LiPo. But I think this is just not possible...right?

Hi Jonathan,

A resistor to cause a drop will not be a good solution as the current into the battery will change causing the drop to differ. I will reach out to you on email to work a few options out.
