LM5156H: PSE Flyback

Part Number: LM5156H
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PMP22764, LM5155, LM5156

Hi All

we want to use LM5156H for PSE Flyback. Would you recommend this device?

If possible Vin from 12V to 48V -> Vout something between 52V to 56V

or at lease Vin from 24V to 48V  -> Vout something between 52V to 56V

Min power 50W to support 802.3bt Type3 Class 5 or if possible 60W for Class 6

The closest TI Ref Design that i found is PMP22764, and the difference is

- It uses LM5155

- It only supports 24V input ( can this be changed  to also support 48Vin?) What components needs to be changed?

- please can you provide the datasheet of the used transformer Coilcraft ZB1368-AL, can this transformer support our application requirements?

or can you propose a suitable off the shelf transformer that support our application?

Best Regards,

David.

  • Hello,

Thanks for reaching out. Let me share few comments here:

    • Yes, for this application the device you chose is fine
    • The LM5155 and the LM5156 are pin to pin compatible, with the only difference that the LM5155 has an AGND pin while the LM5156 offers the possibility of enabling the DRSS (which is a feature that helps mitigating EMI)
    • The reference design you linked is a very good starting point, if higher Vin is needed we would recommend checking the rating of the caps, the compensation and the transformer. The Excel QuickStart calculator is a good starting point to check all the parameters of your design: https://www.ti.com/lit/zip/snvc240
    • I currently do not have the datasheet of the Coilcraft transformer, but the Excel calculator is also the first step in selecting the transformer as it will suggest inductance, peak current and turns ratio. Do you already know what will be the maximum output current in your system?

Please let us know if you have further questions and we would be happy to help.

    Kind regards,
    EM
