BQ40Z50: overcurrent in discharge protection

Hi 

I have an issue with the BQ40Z50 where it is switching off the discharge FET under loads of around 15 amps and therefore disconnecting from the battery, I have set my OCD1 and 2 thresholds much higher and also have set the AOLD threshold hardware protection threshold higher, but the issue persists. 

Is there anything else configuration wise that needs to be looked at to prevent this sort of issue.

    Hello Ian,

    Do you know what exact protection is triggering (OCD or AOLD)? Do you see any of the flags in safety status? It sounds like you may be hitting a hardware protection of some kind. Can you share a log and .GG file? That should show what is triggering/causing this issue.

    I can see the OCD1,OCD2 and CUV bits being set in safety alert register in the GUI the log does not seem to pick up everything as these bits change quickly

    From a quick look at the log I may have a cell under voltage issue under load can you have a look and give me your opinion thanks

    Hello Ian,

    Thanks for sharing. From the log, I can see that CUV is triggering. The ~13A load causes the voltage to drop to around 11.1V, which with 4s would be about 2.7V per cell, which is below your 2.85V CUV threshold. I don't see why OCD1 or 2, or even AOLD should set with this load since you are not hitting the thresholds as far as I can see from the log. I would recommend enabling lifetime data so you can see the number of safety events to confirm though.

    It seems that the CUV is the main issue here. The voltage drop from doing a ~13C discharge is just too much. Even if you disabled the CUV, it is still dangerous for the cells to be so low. If you need to have such a large load, you will need higher capacity cells. I don't think it will ever be feasible with the current setup. Also, there is a chance for thermal runaway (you can see the temperature rapidly rising in the log before the gauge activates the safety).

    Hi Alex

    The load we have at the moment is excessive and not correct this is another separate issue we are trying to solve. I will not alter the CUV threshold but focus on reducing the load so the cell voltages do not go so low.

    Good to se the BQ is doing what it is supposed to,
