TPS23758: Use of single secondary transformer possible?

Part Number: TPS23758
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: , TPS23753AEVM-001

Hi Team,

Can you have a look at the following customer question please? I can send you the schematic off-line if needed.

Could you please help me in design of TPS23758 PD module for PoE Application?  Specs:  48V DC input, Required: 5V output and 600 mA Current.

Recommended Flyback transformer from EVM Board not suitable for desired output. So, I have chosen Single secondary transformer instead of dual secondary transformer(EMV Board recommended) as there were no alternatives with 3W output.

Does the circuit function with this Transformer, or do I need to make any changes from recommended EVM model?  Does Schottky diode function here when I replace Transistor at the output ?  Also have a look at transformer polarity.

Thank you,

  • Franz,

TPS23758EVM-080 is designed for 5V,13W applications. The transformers are custom designed for this and we don't recommend changing to any random transformers. Please follow our reference design. Thanks.

    Best regards,

    Penny

  • Hi Penny,

We do not require 5V,2.4A output from TI recommended Transformer. Requires only 5V,600mA. Also we are using Diode flyback not the synchronous Flyback.

Kindly share your opinion for the requirements.

    Thanks in advance,

    warm regards

  • Obi,

We don't recommend using diode flyback for 5V output and low power applications as it will give you low efficiency and worse load regulations. You may want to take a look at TPS23753AEVM-001 if you want to design 5V with diode flyback for lower power applications. Thanks.

    Best regards,

    Penny
