MC34063A: Design help/Alternative

Genius 15629 points
Part Number: MC34063A
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LMR14050, TPS54531

Hi Experts,

Good day. Seeking your assistance on this query.

1. We want to ask that I m using MC34063 IC, Can I use MOSFET or an NPN Transistor to gain High Current. Please see attached file for the schematic (from datasheet);
2. Possible a low cost solution other than MC34063 that could meet the following parameters: Vin : 6V to 30V DC , Vout = 5.1 Volt, IC = 5Amp. Please Provide the IC IN SO8 Package or D Pack.

Seems our Webench tool has no simulation model for SOIC (D) package.

Thank you for your support.

Regards,
Archie A.

  • Hi Archie,

Thank you for reaching out. For your application, A buck converter like LMR14050 would  simplify your design compared to MC34063.

    Best Regards.

  • Hello Feng,

    Thank you for your guidance.

As oer the customer, they used MC34063 IC (5V /1.5Amp) for the mobile charging system which costs around INR 4.25. Just got a new IC which was a little more potent than the HC2020 (5V/3 AMP) which costs around Rs 6.25.

Now they are looking for ICs that are up to 5V /4 -5 Amp and which cost almost the same.

Please help us on this regard.

    Thank you very much.

    Regards,
    Archie A.

  • Hi Archie,

I  would move this thread to MV BUCK to see if there is any better solution.

    Best Regards.

  • Hi Archie,

What is your abs max VIN requirement ? I see above 30V, but is that nominal that is the maximum VIN the customer will expect to see.

I am assigning this Junjie Mai 's Team for low current low cost product within BSR MV

    Thanks!

  • Hi Archie

I am also curious about the input voltage. Would you please tell me the input voltage of the application? And the margin that you want to keep. We have TPS54531 whose max operation voltage is 28V and its ABS input voltage is 30V, it is in SOIC8 package and can output 5A. Would this device meet the requirement?

    Hope that helps.
