What is the difference between load switch and high side switch in TI's power switch product classification?

  • To clarify my confusion more , I mean that many load switches also use high side MOSFETs as switch control elements. Why are they classified as load switches? But the others are classified as high side switches?  What is the main basis for classification?

    Attached below is a table showing the differences between load switches and high-side switches in terms of functionality and characteristics.

    In addition to that, the two power switches are used for different applications. Load switches are primarily used for power distribution while high-side switches are used for output power protection. High-side switches have an additional V_ds clamp, that handles inductive off-board loads comfortably. It is used as a protection for any inductive, capacitive or resistive loads.

    From your table, it seems that high side switch covers most of the functions of load switch, so can high side switch also be used on-board as a load switch?

    There is another question. In our common applications, when discrete components are used to build high side switche circuit, P-MOSFET is usually used. But I found that in TI's integrated high side switch products, N-MOSFET is often used as the switching MOSFET working with a internal charge pump. What is the reason?

    Yes, you can use a high-side switch as a load switch. It fulfils the purpose but has additional functionality. 

    With regards to TI using N-MOSFET is more of a cost decision. Using a N-MOSFET is better in terms of cost and also has a charge pump for biasing the gate voltage.
