TPS61378-Q1: inductor selection

Part Number: TPS61378-Q1

Hi Expert,

For TPS61378, I see that there is a description about peak-to-peak current ripple. I’m confused that why peak-to-peak current ripple between 800mA to 2A is recommended. And if we use this IC with a lower current ripple, what impact will this have? Could you explain it and give us some advice about it?

Thanks!

Ethan Wen

  • Hi Ethan,

This recommended current ripple is designed for control loop stability. As you can seen in datasheet, TPS61378 is peak current fixed frequency PWM mode converter, which need slope compensation for stability. If the current ripple is too small, the integrated slope compensation may be not enough. And lead to loop instability.

So for better loop stability and avoid subharmonic oscillation, 800mA to 2A current ripple is recommended. May I ask why do you need smaller current ripple?

    Best Regards,
