LP8556: Vout short to GND and IC damaged

Part Number: LP8556

Hi Team,

Our customer are doing exception tests. After short-circuiting the VOUT of the LP8556 to the ground, there will be smoke and the chip will be damaged. We checked the SPEC of LP8556 and found that this chip supports the OCP function. Under what circumstances does OCP take effect? What is the threshold current for triggering OCP? Is it reasonable to short the Vout to GND for testing OCP function?

Looking forward to your suggestion.

Best Regards,

Jaden Yue

  • Hi jaden

LP8556 detects internal SW FET current and stops boost SW when it hits overcurrent limit. Due to the structure of asynchronous boost, input current can be still high when boost output is shorted to GND. Fuse or power line FET on Vin can be used to protect the circuit.
