TPS61088: Set the output current limit using ILIM pin

Part Number: TPS61088
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM5175, TPS55289

Hi Team,

Our customer would like to limit the output current of their custom made board with TPS61088 to 1.4A and would like to confirm if it is possible using the ILIM pin. I understand that the ILIM pin sets the peak current of the inductor but is it possible to use this pin to limit the output current of the TPS61088 to 1.4A?

Here is the schematic diagram from our customer. The input voltage is 5V while the output is 7V. He tried to changed the value of R21 from 100k to 162k but with a load of 2.4 ohms and current of around 2.5A, but the overcurrent feature didn't worked.

Regards,

Danilo

  • Hi Danilo,

You are right that TPS61088 can only limit input peak current and this is one protection function which is not accurate. And when the input current reach the set input current limit, output voltage will drop because the input power is limited.

  • Hi Eric,

Thank you for this information. Our customer is looking for an alternative boost converter for 5V to 7V @1.4A application with current limit function. Power output is around 10 watts. I found the LM5175 which employs current-mode control, however, it is quite expensive and requires several external parts like four MOSFETs. The TPS55289 seems a good option, however, it is a preview device.

Can you please confirm if we have a lower cost and simpler boost converter with current limit function?

    Regards,

    Danilo

  • Hi Danilo,

TPS55289 will be RTM next month. Will this time ok for customer's project schedule?
