TPS61022: IC failure on short test

Guru 19645 points
Part Number: TPS61022
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS61235P

One customer confirm the output short test on TPS61022.

When 3.3Vin to 5Vout condition to short, output short protection start and inductor (input) current increase 10A.

These waveform is very similar to datasheet Figure 8-11 (normal operation).

But, when changed low Vin: 2.9V setting (Vout is 5V), inductor current increase and continue to 11A and IC was damaged.

Please let me know three points below for prevent the failure;

①Is there any external circuit for prevent failure?

 For example, output short protection and react forced IC off (EN control), disconnect, etc.

 By the way, is there lineup for more safer (above function included) IC?

②When ① is no, please advice for decrease inductor current on output short protection.

③How is the maximum current rating the internal FET?

If need more detailed information, schematic, and waveform, please contact e-mail.

Best regards,

Satoshi

  • Hi  Satoshi,

    i am confused that why you got a higher peak current with a lower input. that seems don't make sense.

    may be it caused by different state of short, right? i mean Vout drop slower when Vin is 2.9.

    for 1, i think it is not easy to design a external circuit to protect.

    could you share you detailed application, such as input range, output current range. then may be i can give a suggestion about other device.

    for 2, i think the peak current is decided by your short state, if the output voltage can be pull-down fast enough, the peak current should be a lower one.

    for 3, i think there is vally current limit only, and the peak current of FET internal is decided by you input voltage, output voltage, rdson of FET and DCR of inductor.

    BTW, is it possible inductor saturates and becomes a wire in your test?

  • Hi Tao,

    Thank you for reply,

    I answer your question below;

    ・Vin: 2.9V~4.2V (Li-Ion battery), Vout:5.1V

    ・Iout: 450mA_normal, 1.5A_Max

     Application have audio output, these power is large and need 1.5A.

    ・Inductor is HER5027-1R0N from Sagami Elec, it maybe not saturated.

    I interested in TPS61235P, but I worry about short protection for the same operate as TPS61022 or not.
