BQ24800: About coil selection

Part Number: BQ24800

We are thinking that we will use 2.2uH coil because we can use it from our stock. And charging current is around 6A and switching frequency 800kHz.

Is above combination no problem?

Or, we must be use 3.3uH as table 20? is changing parts necessary?

Could you teach the your opinion and reason?

Best regards,

  • Using the 2.2 uH inductor should not be a problem if the inductor saturation current is high.

Use equation 7 to find the ripple current of your worst case duty cycle. Then use equation 6 to find the saturation current value. If your duty cycle is 0.5, I calculated 2.8 amps of ripple. So, your inductor will need to have a saturation current limit greater than 2.8/2 + 6 = 7.4.
