BMS research

I am a student at BYU-Idaho doing a market research project on Battery Monitoring System technology.  My sources have led me to TI and I'm interested in learning more about technology that TI is developing to monitor automotive batteries, especially for hybrid vehicles.  What do they measure in the life of the battery (impedance specifically)?  What are the specifications of these systems (current, voltage range, CPU requirements, size, etc.)?  What are the costs of manufacturing these?  How much are they sold for and to whom (car manufacturers or battery manufacturers)?  Anything that could help me in my research would be great.  Thank you!
