BQ76952: How to do co-layout design w/ BQ76942 in schematic level

Part Number: BQ76952
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ76942

Hi Team,

Customer's application is 7-cells battery monitor. Currently they want to do co-layout design between our BQ76952 and BQ76942 because of device shortage. I see all most every pins of above two devices are same except voltage sense pins.

Here are the support needed:

1. Is that okay to do co-layout design between BQ76942 and BQ76952? If yes, how to cope w/ the voltage sense pins since they only use 7-cells. Better you can share some schematic drawing. Thanks.

Best,

Stanley

  • Hey Stanley,

It should be possible to stack a 942 with a 952. We don't have any example documentation for this sort of application though. You can take a look at our technical article on stacking. https://e2e.ti.com/blogs_/b/powerhouse/posts/how-to-stack-battery-monitors-for-high-cell-count-industrial-applications This is on stacking two 952s, but it still applies to your configuration. More information related to stacking should be released later this year.

    Thanks,
    Caleb

  • Hi Caleb,

It's not the stack case here. This a back-up co-layout design case, which means customer will want to use same schematic and same software setting either for our BQ76952 or our 942 in case of device shortage. I see the pinouts of 952 and 942 are similar except VCx pins. So my questions are:

    1. Is that okay to use same software setting for 952 and 942?

    2. How to deal with the difference VCx pins between 952 and 942?

Pls help us check it internally. Thanks.

    Best,

    Stanley

  • Hey Stanley,

    1. You cannot use the same software settings between the 952 and 942. One issue that comes to mind is the mapping of the VCx pins between the 942 and 952.

    2. Careful design would be needed to handle the empty VCx pins on the 952. Figure 4-2 of the Technical Reference Manual explains how to terminate unused cell input pins on the 952. We don't have any reference designs regarding this.

    Thanks,
    Caleb
