TPS6594-Q1: How to use the ESM module?

Hi E2E's engineer:

I try to write the control bit to start the ESM_MCU ,write '1' to the register ESM_MCU_START(0x8F),I find the value still '0' when Iread the register ESM_MCU_START after I writed 1 to this register，I don't know if this module has started successfully or not.Are there any preconditions before I start ESM_MCU module.

Before starting the ESM, you must enable it and configure the watchdog.

In the case of not using the watchdog, write WD_EN=0 then ESM_MCU_EN=1 before writing 1 to ESM_MCU_START. Writing 0 to WD_EN even if one of your GPIOs is set to the DISABLE_WD function.

I don‘t use watchdog ,the GPIO8 pull up to disable the watchdog.I write WD_EN=0 and ESM_MCU_EN=1,but I read the value still be '0' of ESM_MCU_START after I write 1 to ESM_MCU_START.

Can you tell me which specific TPS6594 part or PDN you are using? I will run a check in the lab tomorrow.

Hello Xibin,

The TPS65941111 is not intended to be used as a standalone device. It is programmed to be paired with TPS65941212 or '1213 as the primary PMIC in a 2 PMIC solution.

Are you are attempting to use the '1111 as a standalone device? If so, this is likely the source of your problem.

I am sorry I told your wrong part,I used the part is TPS65941212RWERQ1，I use the TPS65941212RWERQ1 and TPS65941111RWERQ1 together,I write and reafd some register in the part TPS65941212RWERQ1

Hello Xibin,

Please confirm there aren't any interrupts triggered before starting the ESM. These are the steps I took.

Apply 3.3V VCCA
Pull Enable HIGH on the primary PMIC, the TPS65941212. This should also enable the rails on the '1111 to turn on.
Set NSLEEPB1 and NSLEEPB2 to 1.
Clear any interrupts that may have happened due to wake up / power up. ENABLE_INT and BIST_PASS_INT should have are the normal culprits.
Disable watch dog by setting WD_EN=0
Enable MCU ESM by setting ESM_MCU_EN=1
Start the ESM, by setting. ESM_MCU_START=1.
