TPS61178: Inductor selection

Part Number: TPS61178

Hi TI Team,

We have selected TPS61178 for one of our products to drive a 12V, 2A constant load.

I have run a simulation on the web bench for part selection and as per the web bench result it suggests an 18A saturation current inductor, so my question is, why do we need to use high saturation current inductor while our current requirement is 2A only.

  • Hi Himanshu,

TPS61178 has ILIMIT pin to set the peak switching current limit. You can calculate your application maximum peak switching current in the condition of Vin_min, Vout, full load condition. The selected inductor saturation current is suggested to be higher than calculation result. And configure the ILIMIT pin resistor based on your calculation result with 20% margin.
