TPS40210-Q1: Output Driver Question

Part Number: TPS40210-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS40210

Hi Team,

Please see customer question below:

I just wanted to know the gate driver type of TPS40210, I mean it drives with constant current or it just regulates the Voltage at that point?.

In my schematic we are using the gate resistance as 47ohm, I need to calculate the FET power losses so I need that info.

Thank you! Reed

  • Hi Reed,

The gate driver provides a high/low voltage to turn on/off the MOSFET. The gate driver sink/source current means the maximum instantaneous current the gate driver can sink/source.

The gate driver strength determines the switching speed (switching loss) of the MOSFET. The gate charge loss of the MOSFET is determined by gate charge, switching frequency, and gate drive voltage. Refer https://www.ti.com/lit/ml/slua618a/slua618a.pdf (equation 9) for gate charge losses.
