BQ24072: BQ24072 worked for a while but stopped charging

Hello Dear,

It's the first I use BQ24072.

It worked perfectly for a few times, and then It stopped charging the battery. The /CHG led blinks when I plugg my DC jack of 5V and it goes OFF. The Output is still working whether with Battery or with 5V DC jack.

So I don't think that the module is dead. I also tried to test the reverse polarity protection by putting the Battery in reverse, I don't know if it's that what caused the issue.

Can you help me please.

Hi Reda,

Can you measure the TS voltage and let me know what the value is? I want to ensure that the device hasn't been mixed with the BQ24072T which operates with a different battery TS method. Can you also measure the output voltage with and without the battery? I want to see if the IN is properly powering the device and it isn't entering VDPPM.

From a schematic point of view I do notice:

Is the /CE pin left floating or is it being pulled low somewhere? While it can be left floating do to an internal pulldown, we do recommend not leaving it floating to ensure proper operation.

What is the battery voltage when you see it not charging the battery?

TS voltage : 0.06V

The module réference I used in my board is from LCSC : lcsc.com/.../Battery-Management-ICs_Texas-Instruments-BQ24072RGTR_C140288.html

The output voltage is :

With Battery : 3.88V (voltage of battery)
with dc jack : 4.30V

The /CE pin is connected to a GPIO of Raspberry pi, when the device was working I could see the /CHG led being OFF when /CE is pulled HIGH and vice versa, also now when I pulled it high the Led doesn't blink at all. so there is no problem with /CE pin.

also , I want to ask also, when it says Reverse current, short-circuit protection does that mean reverse polarity protection if I put the battery in reverse or not ?

Hi Reda,

It looks like the TS voltage is too low, I expect it to be about 750 mV with a 10k resistor. I'm not too sure why that would be the case. Would you be able to switch the IC with a board that is confirmed working?

I would like to see if the behavior follows the board or the IC.

When we mention reverse current, it's from the OUT pin to the IN pin.

Short circuit protection is referring to the OUT and BAT pin and shorting those to ground or if the battery is deeply discharged.

The battery pin can only handle -0.3V

both two prototype pcb I had, have now the same charging issue. I just received the second prototype pcb, I will run some tests on it and see if the issue was caused by me when I reversed the battery.
