TPS65988EVM: Enabling the alt mode in the EVB

Part Number: TPS65988EVM

Hi all,

i have tried for few hours to enable the Alternate mode to generate video throw the Display port connection in the TPS65988 EVB.

No matter what configuration i tried via the latest "Application Customization tool" i have not success.

The option of "Supports DP v1.3 signaling" is enable.

The end point device which is tried is Samsung S10 / S20 / Laptop with Thunder bolt connection.

Please attached a project example for the configuration tools or let me knew how to configure it correctly.

This feature is a must at our project lines and i will apricate any feature assist.

Thanks a lot,

Roee.

  • Hi Roee,

Please note that the TPS65988EVM is only setup to support DisplayPort Source from the USB-PD port. The support test setup is described in section 7.1.3 of the TPS65988EVM User's Guide: https://www.ti.com/lit/ug/slvub62b/slvub62b.pdf

Based on your description, it appears you are trying to take video from a phone/laptop connected to the USB-PD port and have that display on a monitor connected to the DisplayPort on the other end of the EVM. The mulitplexer and supporting hardware on the TPS65988EVM will never be able to support this case. The TPS65988EVM is set to take a DisplayPort video source input into the DisplayPort connector of the EVM and then transmit this to a monitor connected to the USB-PD port.

    Thank you,
    Eric

  • Hi Eric,

Thank you for your response, Your assumption is correct.

Does TI have such a chip / solution that fit my requirement:

    a. Take video from USB-C ALT mode and convert it to display port (as output) ?

    b. Enable to charge the connected USB-C connected device and control his PDOs ?

I saw that "TUSB1046" (which also have Evolution board) is a good solution for us, please tell me if it true.

if it is, how complex this chip to enable my requirements ? Does it have any GUI / Application for the Evolution board that let me configure the IC without any long development process ?

    Many thanks,

    Roee.

  • Hi Roee,

From a USB-PD controller perspective, TPS65988 is still the correct IC. However, the TPS65988EVM uses the TUSB546 mux device which will not support your data needs. You would need to use the TUSB564 or TUSB1064 in order to meet the requirements you've described. This device is very similar however, it just supports the displayport data direction that you require. Control of the mux through the PD controller is the same (GPIOs)

I would suggest you ask a new question with TUSB1064 as the part number in order for those device experts to help further with a multiplexer standpoint.

    Thank you,
    Eric

  • Hi, using TUSB564 dont solve either my requirements, although it does serve the data path: USB-C Alt mode to Display port. it can`t power charge the connected device throw the Power delivery protocol (Can`t change the PDOs).

Does Ti have such a IC that does the both: Data side: Type C -> DP and Power charge the connected device throw Power delivery protocol. Many other companies have such a solution (STMicroelectronics for example).

  • Hi Roee,

Yes, the combination of TPS65988 + TUSB564 can be enabled for Data side: Type C -> DP and Power charge the connected device throw Power delivery protocol. Note that you need both a PD controller (TPS65988) to handle the power delivery functionality and a super-speed mux (TUSB564) to handle the data capabilities.

    Thank you,
    Eric
