Power Muxing

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS2113A, TPS2115A, TPS22933, TPS22953, TPS2116, TPS22916, LM66100

Hi team,

I help my customer to ask questions.

"

We have a requirement to multiplex 3 power sources each of 5V and 2A rating.

In this regard we are looking into TPS22933, TPS2113A & TPS2115A. We have few queries in this regard.

TPS22933 : Can this support 2A capacity?

TPS2113A/TPS2115A : Can this support 2A capacity? What is current limiting here?

We are looking for low power dissipation solution. Kindly suggest a suitable solution for our requirement.

"

Thank you very much for your help.

Best regards,

  • Hi Zhonghui,

The TPS2115A would be the only device which could support a 2A capacity, but I would recommend our new TPS2116 device which offers a faster switchover and better availability/resources/support. There aren't any issues using multiple pmuxes as long as you're able to configure the logic. It is possible to use TPS2116 in combination with a low Iq/Isd load switch or ideal diode (such as LM66100, TPS22916/TPS22953) but it would need external logic to work properly.

  • Hi Elizabeth,

    Thanks for info.

What I could understand is both TPS2115A & TPS2116 support 2A capacity. But the later is preferable in case of battery operated systems due to low quiescent current.

If I use multiple stages of TPS2115A/TPS2116, what would be the voltage drop per stage??
What would be the power consumption of TPS2115A/TPS2116 per stage?

    Thanks,

    Best regards,

  • Hi Zhonghui,

Yes I realize I worded my previous statement poorly. What I meant is of the solutions you mentioned, the TPS2115A can support 2A, however both the TPS2115A and TPS2116 support 2A capacity. Therefore, you can use multiple stages of either to accomplish 3 to 1 muxing.

Your voltage drop per stage will depend on you current capability and Ron of the device. With regard to the TPS2116, it has a 40mohm Ron typ. Therefore, 2A across the device will result in a 80mV voltage drop. The TPS2115A has double the Ron which would result in double the voltage drop.

The power consumption will be dependent on your system but values relating to it can be found in the electrical characteristics section of the datasheet.

  • Hi Elizabeth,

    We are going with TPS2116.
    Thanks for the support.
I just want to re-confirm that TPS2116 will support up to 2.5A continuous current?

    Thanks,

    Best regards,

  • Hi Zhonghui,

    Glad to hear it!

Yes the TPS2116 will support up to 2.5A of continuous current.

    Best Regards,
