TPS7H2211-SP: Input and Output Capacitors needs to be reduced

Part Number: TPS7H2211-SP

I need to reduce the input and output capacitors for the TPS7H2211.  For space applications, the datasheet uses 170uf for input and another 170uf for the output of the TPS7H2211.  I have 1 TPS7H2211 output driving into 5 parallel TPS7H2211.  The combined capacitive load for the input 12V PSU exceeds the PSU recommendation.  What is the recommended minimum input and output capacitors for TPS7H2211?  What is the risk of reducing the input/output capacitors?  What is the rationale for using the high value capacitors?

  • Hi,

The minimum recommended output capacitor for this device is 10 uF, shown in the Pin Functions table on page 3 of the datasheet. It is good practice to match the output capacitance value on the input.

The reason 170 uF was used for CIN and COUT in the datasheet example, on the EVM, and for the SEE report is because space applications often use higher capacitances to help reduce Single Event Transients on the output. Using lower capacitances may reduce how well SETs are mitigated.

    Thanks,

    Sarah
