As I found that there was significant resistance in my setup for connecting all the cells in my battery, I have had to run a cycle to get a new ChemID that came back as 457.

I have now started the process of doing a learning cycle. I have managed to fully discharge the battery pack, getting the VOK and RDIS bits to clear and the REST bit to set. I then wanted to start the charge to full part of the cycle. The only way I could get this to happen was to do a REST from the commands tray.

I have then started the charge cycle. What I see is that the VOK bit has not set once the charging started. Please find attached the LOG file for the start of this part of the cycle.

In preparation for your answer I started to recharge the battery pack. Unfortunately this is failing when the battery is not fully charged. I have added LOG and GG file to see if you can help.

Hey Bruce,

I have looked at your log files and have a few questions.

1. After your initial discharge, how long are you relaxing before you begin to charge again. The rest bit typically will take a few hours to set naturally and it is pivotal that this rest time is present when doing learning cycles.

2. During your charging log, I notice you are only charging for a few minutes. Is there part of this log beforehand where you are charging for longer? Also, you will need to taper out your current when the voltage of the battery reaches charging voltage.

It would be very helpful to attach a log of your full CHG/DSG cycles so I can also see the relax period between them.

Sorry for the misunderstanding on my part. I got a bit ahead of myself and tried to resolve a number of issues in one communication.

Attached is the LOG file for the first two stages of the learning cycle, namly discharge and rest. It was after this that I found that I could not charge the battery as the charge FET was turned off. The only way I could get the battery to start charging was to issue a reset command.

Hey Bruce,

I think I have found why you are seeing the charge FET off here.

When you begin charging with a voltage in the PV range (very low voltage), the gauge tries to limit the current going into the battery by having current travel through the PCHG FET rather than the normal CHG FET. The PCHG path requires the current to travel through a 300ohm resistor that limits the current.

Eventually, the voltage will exit the PV range and be high enough to use the normal current path through the CHG FET.

If you wish to disable this functionality and have current always go through the normal CHG path, set [PCHG_COMM] = 1.

I have attached a page from the TRM that discusses this feature in a bit more detail.

I tried a new learning cycle and have got to the end of the first discharge. After the relax the VOK and RDIS have cleared and REST has set. I now tried to start the charge stage but it will not work. My charger will not initiate a charge because the discharge FET has been turned off. If I use a power supply I can push power into the battery as the charge FET is on.

Two questions. 1) What is wrong why did the discharge FET turn off. 2) Is there a way to set all the internal registers to factory default so I can start from a clean slate.

Hi Bruce,

When the battery is discharged too much, the discharge FET will open as a protection mechanism. This (at least from the gauges perspective) should not prevent charging, only discharging further until the battery is at a higher voltage level. This to me sounds like a charger level issue.

If you want to do a factory reset, you can download the firmware off of the BQ40Z50 folder on TI.com and re upload the .srec file using bq studio.

After you updated the firmware by updating the .srec file, did you close and re-open BQStudio? If so, did the device autodetect or did you manually have to select the .bqz folder?

I suspect there may be a mismatch now between your .bqz (register map) and .srec (firmware that is preventing the chemistry update).

Hi Jackson,

I have resolved the firmware issue as it seems that even the latest version of BQ Studio does not support the latest version of the chip firmware. I found an older version of the FW that matches the latest that BQ Studio supports and am using that.

After getting this working I have setup all the registers that I felt needed to be set and started aa learning cycle. Unfortunately the test has failed at the end of the charging stage as the FC flag in the battery status register did not get set. I have had a look at the files and can't identify why this is happening.

Are you sending the IT_ENABLE command so that the QEN bit is set before you start the initial discharge? It doesn't appear to be set until after the initial dsg/rest period when the value of ITStat = 19.

There are a few things happening here so let me try to summarize.

If you look at the value of RSOC, it only reaches 37% at the end of your log. This is because the RemCap is only 4298. FullChargeCap = 11647 so 4298/11647 = approx. 37%. The reason I believe there is confusion here is because you are looking at the voltage value at this point and seeing that it is close to the fully charged voltage of your cell when relaxed. The key thing to consider here is that while under load at 2A, the cell is very much not relaxed so the voltage you are seeing can not be used to reflect RSOC or indicate a fully charged battery.

What you will need to do here is use a CC/CV charging profile and allow the current to taper out slowly once the battery voltage reaches its max. this will hold the voltage of the battery steady while continuing to pump current into the cells and therefore accumulating charge. Try to let the current taper out until you are charging at ~50mA. I would suspect the RSOC value to approach 100% and eventually trigger FC. The exact value that current must taper out to may take some fine tuning. Currently with the only CC charging profile you are using at 2A charge current, you are only accumulating enough charge to reach 37% RSOC.

Hi Jackson,

I noticed that the SOC is not reaching the RSOC setting. I have set the FCSETV flag and now get the FC flag setting at the and of the charge. The problem I now have is that, at the end of the charge and rest the [VOK] and [REST] flags are not set. I have reached an update status of 0x05 telling me that the [QMax] has been recorded but the OCV was not. What do I need to fix to get this to happen.

An update to QMax implies an update to OCV as well. This is because a valid OCV measurement is required to update QMax. The fact that you saw update status change to 0x05 is great and is what is expected after the first charge cycle during learning. Now you should begin discharging. On this discharge after the charge where Update Status is now 0x05, the gauge will update resistance values on the way down. Once the cell is depleted again and another QMax update is made, the gauge will be learned and Update Status will be 0x06.

Hi Jackson,

This worked as you say. I then see in the document "Achieving The Successful Learning Cycle" 3.2.6 that to now to deploy the pack we need to getto status of 0x0E. This is done by "If an Update Status of 0E is not obtained, the device can be charged to full, relaxed for 2
hours and then discharged to empty, at which point it should be 0E.". I tried this but it did not work. Files attached. What am I doing wrong this time.

Hi Bruce,

Glad we were able to get to Update Status = 0x06.

For 0x0E, it may take a bit longer than 2 hours to relax so I would simply recommend waiting longer in relax mode after the final charge. See the attached plot: 1st QMax correlates to Update Status = 0x05, Resistance is Update Status = 0x06, and the field QMax is Update Status 0x0E. As you can see it can take longer for this specific Qmax Update. This is because the field QMax is pivotal for highly accurate gauging so it waits until the dv/dt across the cell is near zero to make this update.

Let me know if this still does not resolve the issue and we can look for other possible solutions.

I have left it to rest for about 12 hours. Unfortunately it still did not update to 0xoE. Not sure what to do now.

Bruce,

From your log file it appears that you are only doing a single charge and discharge which would leave you with UpdateStatus = 0x06. To achieve the field QMax update and Update Status = 0E, another charge/relax will be required after what is in the log file you just attached. Was update Status 0x06 before the start of this log? If so, I would expect 0x0E from your data as well.

Let me know and I will look into what may be preventing this update from occurring in the firmware itself.

The status was 0x06 at the start of the cycle and was still 0x06 at the end of the cycle.

In that case, this is something that I will need to look at more closely inside of the actual firmware to find whatever is preventing the update to 0x0E. I will reach out tomorrow with additional possible solutions.

Hello Bruce,

I took a look through your most recent data logs, it looks like the OCVFR bit is being set, when this is set the gauge will wait 48 hours before taking an OCV and updating Qmax. The flat region is defined by the chem ID, are you still using chem ID 457?

This is the range for ID 457, so I don't think this is the chem ID you are currently using:

Q Invalid MaxV = 3330
Q Invalid MinV = 3277

Yes we are still using the chemID 457 as that is what we got when we ran a full cycle with the cells connected nice and close to the chip with very thick leads. I do feel this is a very close result.

Would you like to see the files that gave us this ChemID?

Hello Bruce,

Yes if you could share the GPCCHEM files submitted and the results we can review them. As long as the error is fairly low there should be no issues there.

If you are using LFP_relax the OCVFR bit may behave a little differently:

Qmax can still happen with LFP_Relax = 1. This is indicated by OCVFR. With LFP_Relax = 1, OCVFR will turn 1 right after charge termination. It will turn 0 if all cells were outside the flat zone + margin during charge termination detection and after one or more cells dropped into the flat zone + margin during relax. That’s why you observe OCVFR = 1 outside the flat zone right after charge termination followed by OCVFR = 0 in relax when the cell voltages drop into the flat zone + margin. This is part of the relax detection mechanism for LFP and the bq40z50. The usual Qmax rules apply afterwards. So if the cell voltages become stable and if they are above the flat zone (the margin doesn’t apply now) and if temperature is within required limits, the gauge will qualify this for Qmax.

The max DOD error is high, as long as you charge to full and discharge to empty it should not affect the gauging as much, with relaxations that are in the flat region it could lead to errors in SOC.

Yes you would need to let it rest for at least 48 hours to male sure the gauge does take an OCV if the OCVFR bit is set to ensure you get an OCV taken.
