The datasheet claims that max vout is 6V, however, parametric search for 18V out on TI website results in this IC. What should i believe?

I'm not sure where you see a maximum Vout of 6Vin the datasheet. For the TPS40055, there is an output voltage range for some of the IC's pins on page 2. This is just for the pins listed and not for the Vout of the system.
As these ICs are controllers, the only output voltage limit that I am aware of is due to the maximum duty cycle and your Vin. The 'parametrics' table on this product page, http://focus.ti.com/docs/prod/folders/print/tps40055.html, has the maximum Vouts achievable.

Absolute maximum ratings
VOUT Output voltage range COMP, RT, KFF, SS –0.3 V to 6 V
Kindly note that there is no such pin as Vout and is easily assumed the output voltage of the system
