TPS54240EVM range question

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS54240

I'm looking for information on the TPS54240, we have the evaluation board and it works just as expected across its input range and the specs on the part look really good for our design requirements. What we would like to know is how the part reacts across a wider range, specifically from say 4.4V to 39V supplying 2A @ 3.3V.  Has anyone tried this?  I have entered the design into the SwitcherPRO software and everything seems reasonable but my experience with other switching converters is that the wider the input range the more headaches.  Any thoughts or pitfalls I should avoid with this part in particular?

  • One thing you will need to what out for is low headroom drop out.  If the input to output voltage is difference is less than 2.1 V, you will want to stay out of eco-mode operation.  When the circuit is in both low headroom and light load, there can be problems with the re-charge of the BOOT cap.  There are some work arounds for this that involve external circuitry (a charge pump from vout to BOOT or a series diode in the PH line and resistor from PH to ground).  On the high input voltage side, you have to make sure that the switch on time is above the minimum controllable on time or you will skip pulses.  Other than that I do not know of any limitations,
