confusing ordering number for UC3842

I was using old UC3842P

now i needed them again for some new cards, i found UC 3842P is obsolete and no more in production.

so now in PDIP package only UC3842N and UC3842NG4 is available..

what does N stands for and what does G4 stands for . is there any website link which explains these new numbering style.. why was P taken out and N put in and what is the standard naming procedure.

Thanks in advance
