EV2400: EV2400 not recognized by BQStudio on Windows 10

Part Number: EV2400
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQSTUDIO, BQ35100

It seems like this is an on-going issue with the EV2400.  I just bought this yesterday from DigiKey and I installed Battery Management Studio v. 1.3.101.  I have the bq35100EVM board to go with this.  When I plugged the EV2400 in on my Windows 10 Pro computer, the USB enumerates correctly and I can see the EV2400 connected as an HID device on one of the ports.  I confirmed this with a USB Device Viewer program.  The EV2400 has all 3 LEDs on (USB, COMM, VOLTEN).  I have an I2C cable from the I2C port 2 going to the BQ35100EVM.  The board Bat+ and Bat- are hooked up to a power supply with 4V Output (based on this video from TI (https://www.ti.com/tool/BQ35100EVM-795)

Unfortunately, the BQstudio doesn't recognize the EV2400.  I downloaded the firmware updater-0.32 and ran it but it gave the classic error everyone else was having.  "Error: No Free EV2400s Detected."

Any solution to this at all?   It's 2022 so Windows 7 system is really hard to find now.

  • This error is commonly seen when the EV2400 is being accessed by another program (or if previous bqStudio process was terminated manually by user).

We have not seen a case where the EV2400 is detected by Windows but not by bqStudio. I would suggest rebooting the system and giving it a try.

  • I rebooted and unplugged all the USB devices except for the EV2400.  Same result.  Since I just got it from DigiKey this morning, I asked them to send a replacement since this unit could be defective.   I'll see whether the new unit would act differently.

  • I have the new EV2400 shipped to me this morning.  I hooked it up and Windows 10 found it with no issue on the USB port and it was enumerated as an HID device just as before.  Now when I try running the BQStudio, it's the same issue.  However, I'm wondering whether I'm not setting up the bq35100EVM board correctly and that's why the BQStudio doesn't recognize my eval board?  I just followed the manual and hooked up everything except for the load.  I assume I don't need the load for it to recognize the board.  For Bat+ and Bat-, I hooked it up to a Keithley 24020 power supply outputting 4V and regulating max current output to 200 mA.

Looking at the circuit diagram for the bq35100EVM, I'm a bit confused how the BQ35100 chip gets its power.  It seems like it's coming from the REGIN which is tied to the Bat+.  I measured TP3 and GND and I do get the same 4V as the Bat+ voltage..  When I remove the J8 jumper, I can measure REG25 and it gives 2.5V.  When J8 is jumpered the measurement on REG25 is 0.  Having J8 jumper doesn't make any difference in terms of the BQStudio still not being able to detect the board.

I also tried hooking up the load with a 45 ohm resistor.  BQStudio still doesn't detect the board.

  • This is my bq35100EVM board.

  • Hello Patrick,

Remove the 2 red wires on GE and Alert.

If that does not work, then disconnect I2C and USB, then plugin in EV2400 to USB and start bqStudio without connecting the bq35100. Check if bqStudio shows EV2400 on the dashboard.

  • I removed the 2 red wires on GE and Alert, and that didn't work.  I disconnected the I2C and USB and started BQStudio with just the USB plugged in.  BQStudio didn't show EV2400 on the dashboard.

After looking through other posts, I noticed that most people were using the older version of BQStudio, so I unistalled version 1.3.101 Build 1 and downloaded 1.3.86.  After the installation was completed, I launched the BQStudio with everything plugged in, and now it's working!!!

I don't know why this older BQStudio works and not the new one.  I have restarted the computer each time I install the software but not this time with the 1.3.86.

I went back to the other EV2400 I had before and now it's working as well.

So, I'm guessing that the problem might be due to having the new BQStudio v. 1.3.101?   I actually even tried the beta version 1.3.111, but that didn't work either.

In any case, thank you for the help.  It's nice having somebody to talk to and discuss this.

  • bqStudio v1.3.101 has been used with the EV2400 for a long time, there is no reason to have to downgrade.

Anyway, it is good that you got it working.
