BQ25790EVM: USB-C on Connector (J1)

Part Number: BQ25790EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS25750, BQ25790, , TPS25750EVM, TUSB320EVM

Hi Team,

Is it possible to hook up USB-C on Connector V1 (J1). On more in detail, Is it possible to connect plus and minus to J1 and D+ and D- on for example JP10. Will this work, or it will need an additional IC like the TPS25750?

Thank you.

Regards,
May

  • Hi May,

The BQ25790 does not have the CC1 and CC2 lines that are required for USB-C communications.  A USB-C communication IC, like TUSB32X or USB controller like TPS25750 are required to get power from USB-C port.

  • HI Jeff,

Thank you for the information, my customer have follow up question.

Do you have a "simple" Dev Board for a USB-C Controller at TI? I have an additional question regarding to usb-c and the BQ25790EVM. In one of your PowerPoints I found a interesting informaiton about USB-C PD. There it states, that if I don´t need more than 15W, I don´t need PD and no CC line. Am I understanding this correct? So If I connect USB-C + (vbus) and GND to the Dev Boards input. It should work and will deliver 5V and up to 3A? Or is a CC line is important for the BQ25790 IC in all cases?

Also, is it possible to connect the TPS25750EVM with the BQ25790EVM board, for Example by soldering a wire on R15 (on TPS25750EVM) and connect this wire (and GND) at V1 on BQ25790EVM?

    Thank you.

    Regards,
    May

  • Hi May,

I have been told it is possible to use resistors to configure the CCX lines so that USB-C can provide 5V and certain output current. But I don't know the resistor configuration and haven't tried it myself.

It is possible to wire the 2 EVMs together but the firmware for the TPS25750EVM may not be suitable.  You would also need to connect the I2C lines together.  I recommend that you order:

  • Thank´s Jeff,

we ordered the TUSB320EVM Board. I think this will do the job in combination with the BQ25790EVM.
