BQ25120A: LS current limit as short circuit isolation?

Part Number: BQ25120A
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS25221

I understood that - as mentioned in the related thread "Max current for LS/LDO output" - I(OCL_LDO) defines the max. current which can be drawn from LS/LDO in the LS mode.

Could the LS output therefore be used as a current limited load switch similar to e.g. the TPS25221?
Example: If components connected to the LS output would by mistake draw more than I(OCL_LDO) - or even in the case of a "hard" short circuit, would the current be properly limited to I(OCL_LDO) without affecting the integrity of the other output voltages of the PMIC? Particularly V(SYS) should not be compromised even if V(SYS) acts as supply voltage for the load switch, i.e. if SYS is connected to VINLS.

If yes, can the short circuit response timing be characterized? Will the LS output be switched off or simply become current limited? Is there a conflict between the max. I(OCL_LDO) and the recommended max. output current from SYS (I(SW) vs. I(OCL_LDO))?

Thanks,
Matthias

  • Hi Matthias,

A LS current draw would affect the source rail which VINLS is tied to. so in the scenario you've suggested, a current draw or short on LS output would have an affect on VSYS if it is the supply voltage for the Load Switch.
