UCC28780: Need device suggestion

Hi..

One of my customer want to work on power supply for their range of products. Here are the specifications.

Customer is considering UCC28780 for their power supply requirement. They have raised below queries.

Does this active clamp switcher ICs support for DC voltage range 14V to 110V?
our understanding for the switching frequency is that the Inductance value can be calculated by assuming the minimum switching frequency. And based on inductance value, input voltage & load condition, the controller will auto tune the switching frequency. It means there is no fixed frequency of operation, like conventional switching controller operates on it.

Here are the specifications for the design.

14Vdc to 110Vdc as input voltage
Output – 12V/50W
Efficiency >90% over the load condition of 10% to 100%.
3KV isolation.

Kindly help with the response & help suggesting the suitable device if any other device is also better proposition.

Hello Mitesh,

Thank you for your interest in TI's active-clamp controllers.

The UCC28780 can work at the higher voltage of your range, but is likely to have trouble at the 14-V end. Notably, it needs at least 17.5V to start (actually 18.2V max).

There is a line of active-clamp forward-mode controllers that can accomodate the entire 14V-110V input range.
I suggest to consider the UCC2897A, UCC2891, or UCC2893 devices, or any other on this selection list: https://www.ti.com/power-management/acdc-isolated-dcdc-switching-regulators/pwm-controllers/products.html#p1129=Active-Clamp%20Forward .

One of these should be able to meet your requirements, although >90% efficiency at 10% load may not be easily achievable.
