TPS40170: Power efficiency

Dear all,

We found that the Power efficiency of TPS40170 is low.

When there is no load, the power consumption can be 5W or higher. Are there any energy saving mode to lower the Power consumption?

Our application is 48V to 12V conversion.

Hello David

Unfortunately, there isn't . TPS40170 runs in CCM only.

Please consider LM5145/46 if you need a voltage mode controller.

David, you can also consider the LM5141/-Q1 or LM5148/9/-Q1 current-mode controllers with low IQ. These are 65V and 80V rated input, respectively, and are designed for high light-load efficiency.

5W at no load sounds high. Check your FET and inductor selection (for switching / gate drive loss and core loss, respectively).
