BQ79600-Q1: Can the BBP/BBN pins be used to detect a blown fuse?

My customer has a question regarding this device.

This IC currently contains two Bus bar pins (BBP & BBN). They were wondering if there's a way to use those pins to detect a blown fuse in a module under the following conditions:

 

  • Fuse blown in a standalone module and on standby
  • Fuse blown in a module that is stacked and on standby
  • Fuse blown in a module that is stacked and charging 
  • Fuse blown in a module that is stacked and discharging.

It's not super clear if the BBP /BBN can be utilized for this purpose.

Can you please clarify?

  • HI Lauren,

    First I suppose you mean BQ79616 instead of BQ79600? 

    Second, you can use BBP/BBN to measure the fuse voltage. For a standalone device it should be fine. For a stacked application,  problems are:  when fuse is blown out it is open, which means the BBP/BBN will be measuring the whole stack voltage. The abs max for BBP to BBN is +-80V, you'll need to make sure when fuse is blown the voltage won't exceed that limit. Then it should be okay.

    For charging and discharging scenarios it'll make the voltage applied on the BBP/BBN much higher, due to the Ldi/dt generated from the fuse blown open and current sudden change, it might easily exceed the device abs max limit.
