LM5143-Q1: Vout range and its headroom

Part Number: LM5143-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM5143, LM5143A-Q1, LM5176-Q1

Hi Experts,

My customer is interested in LM5143-Q1 and has several questions.

Could you please help me?

1. LM5143 has FB pin, so it can make adjustable Voutput by resistor (voltage divider).

But I assumed it has some recommend guide of Vin for specific Vout range.

If that, could you please let me know?

2. Please advise about general Vout headroom with specific example. (Duty, inductor value)

3. V_in = 12 (9~16V) Iout = 20A

=> Range of possible Vout (~Vout max)

Additionally, Is there a buck-boost converter capable of high current driving that TI highly recommends for automotive?

Thank you.

  • Hi Dustin,

    1. As this is a buck controller, Vin must be slightly greater than the Vout setpoint to maintain regulation. Vin-max is 65V for this controller (use the LM5143A-Q1 for better availability). Note if Vin dips below the Vout setpoint, then the controller operates in dropout where Vout = ~Vin.

    2. In terms of headroom, it is good to have some margin to deal with load transients. If you can keep Vin at least 1V above the Vout setpoint, this will allow more predictable operation.

As it relates to buck-boost, take a look at the LM5176-Q1 4-switch buck-boost controller.

    Regards,

    Tim
