LM317A: How can we know the case temperature

Hi teams,

I have a customer that design in LM317A and they want to know the case temperature.

The customer using TO-220 package and have a case over heat issue.

And they are wondering if they can know the case temperature by the information from datasheet?

Or do we have other ways that can know the case temperture?

    Hi Len, 

    One way is to take a thermal camera and make the measurement directly. 

    We would need the use case to help estimate the case temperature, like Vin, Vout, Load, and the ambient temperature in which the device operates. 

    Section 11.1.1 Thermal Considerations is a good reference:

    Is the device sitting flat on the PCB or is it standing on the PCB? PCB design also has a big impact on Thermal Dissipation.
