UCC5870-Q1: question about Viso

Part Number: UCC5870-Q1

hi expert

from my understanding to Viso, this parameter represents Maximum AC r.m.s. isolation voltage for one minute.

for UCC5870-Q1, the Viso is 3750v.

I have two questions.

Q1: if we use 3860V DC to test UCC5870, it will damage UCC5870. is it right?

Q2: What is the frequency of the test to use 3860V DC to test UCC5870?Such as one time a day or no limitation or other situations.

  • Hello Jay,

Thanks for reaching out on E2E.

Q1: if we use 3860V DC to test UCC5870, it will damage UCC5870. is it right?

The RMS voltage of a DC voltage is equal to the DC value, so testing for 3750V DC for 1 minute will not damage the UCC5870 isolation barrier. Anything beyond this is not guaranteed, but it is unlikely that there would be damage so close to the rated voltage since we test each unit up to 4500 Vrms in production.

Q2: What is the frequency of the test to use 3860V DC to test UCC5870?Such as one time a day or no limitation or other situations.

I am not sure I understand your question, so let me know if I don't answer properly.

Each UCC5870 is tested in production at 4500 Vrms for 1 second. For qualification we do more extensive tests to guarantee that the 3750V specification is met.

We do not recommend designing a system such that Viso is repeatedly applied under normal operating conditions.

If higher ratings are needed the customer may want to consider UCC5871, which is a pin to pin part with reinforced isolation. www.ti.com/.../UCC5871-Q1

  • hi Daniel

    firstly, thanks for your reply.

the second question means whether there is a requirement for the number of tests for UCC5870.

For example, we can do many times to test UCC5870 in a certain period of time, such as 5 *times in one hour or other requirement

thanks for your advice, customer is preparing to use UCC5871.But they only have UCC5870 samples to use now.

  • Hi Jay,

We test our devices according to the UL requirements. Some more explanation of this is provided in this white paper: https://www.ti.com/lit/wp/slyy063/slyy063.pdf

In particular VISO is described on pages 3 and 4.

    Daniel
