BQ34Z100-G1: SOC update after first boot

Part Number: BQ34Z100-G1

Hello,

we have one queston regarding BQ34Z100PWR-G1. After we assemble the battery pack, BQ takes quite some time to update the SOC value. We are reading the documentation and are a little confused. In some places it is written that after loading the image on the BQ it is necessary to set IT ENABLE:

2.1.1.15 IT ENABLE: 0x0021

Forces the fuel gauge to begin the Impedance Track algorithm, sets Bit 2 of UpdateStatus and causes

the [VOK] and [QEN] flags to be set in the CONTROL STATUS register. [VOK] is cleared if the voltages

are not suitable for a Qmax update. Once set, [QEN] cannot be cleared. This command is only available

when the fuel gauge is UNSEALED and is typically enabled at the last step of production after the system

test is completed.

The problem is that this bit is already set in the image and we see no point in setting it again. Can you please check what the procedure is after the first connection and what exactly needs to be done after that? The problem we want to solve is that the gauge gets the correct SOC information as soon as possible. Sometimes it's a few minutes, and sometimes it's a few hours, which is not ok for production.

  • Hello Matej,

Make sure that the cells are at rest before being connected. If the cells were charged/discharged before being attached, then the voltage will be changing and VOK gets cleared.

The documentation for learning cycle has a step to set UpdateStatus to 0x02 before taking a golden image. Send the IT enable command after programming the golden image and attaching cells.
