BQ28Z610: How to configure a Battery pack of 2s with BQ28Z610EVM-532 & Issue to read capacity in bqStudio

Part Number: BQ28Z610
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: EV2400, , , BQSTUDIO

Hello TI,

I am using  BQ28Z610EVM-532, EV2400 for evaluation a Battery pack.

Parameters of the battery pack:

   Nominal voltage- 7.4V

   Charging voltage- 8.4V

   Capacity 1200mAh

The battery pack has inbuilt short circuit protection( charg FET & discharg FET), with two LI UF553450Z cells connected in series like the picture below shows. It has only 3 battery connections which are PACK+, PACK-, TH for temperature mesure.

Physical connection on EMV board:

1.Pack+ connected to 2P

2.Pack- connected to 1N

3. Nothing connected to 1P

The bq28z610 can be well detected by BqStudio. When a resistor connected to PACK+ & PACK- on the EMV board, it also shows the state "Discharging" and the discharging current can also be read. However, the remaining capacity and Full Charge capacity are always 0 with "Relative state of charge" be 100% all the time during charging or discharging.

The configurations on the BQStudio:

1) DA bit 0 is set to 1 ( otherwise the voltage will drop to 3.7 which is voltage of one cell)

2) Gas Gauging configuration:

Could the EMV board be used with a battery pack like this?( only two connections ) Since I cannot connect from battery pack to 1P on the EMV board, do I need to short it to 2P and pretend it's a one-cell pack? How should I configure the software properly to read the capacity and state of charge?

Thanks for your reply in advance

Kind regards,

Dian

  • Hello Dian,

bq28z610 is intended to be used where each cell connection is available. The protection features are cell based and without 1P, it is likely to get confused.

A top of stack gauge like the bq34z100-G! may be a better choice
