TPS65987DDJ: Question about TPS65987

Part Number: TPS65987DDJ
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65987, TPS65987D

Hi

My customer has questions as below.

Aplication: 3KW Powerbank

-Questions-

1. Is there a program installed in TPS65987 by default? If so, what programs are installed?

2. The TPS 65987 just needs to be charged. What is the minimum circuit for charging only as a source?

(ex. DCDC IC + USB PD Controller + ?)

3. What power source is required to work the TPS 65987? (ex. VCC, CC, VBUS, PP_HV, GPIO(3EA)

4.What is the sequence of motion of TPS65987?

5. What device do I need to download the program of TPS65987?

Thanks

  • Hi David,

    1. Is there a program installed in TPS65987 by default? If so, what programs are installed?

Sortof, on boot, the TPS65987 first attempts to load a customers custom configuration from and external SPI or I2c digital interface. The configuration is a binary file generated by the customer using a GUI we provide, and is not there by default. When this fails, the Pd can load various default configurations, which can be changed by a resistive divider into the ADC_INx pins. This table list the different default configurations. Generally, customers will use the external options to load configurations.

I would recommend reading section 8.4.1 of the datasheet for more information about default configurations.

    2. The TPS 65987 just needs to be charged. What is the minimum circuit for charging only as a source?

I'm not sure what you mean here. The TPS65987 itself does not contain any battery and is not charged.

To power the TPS65987 while the TPS65987 is a source(source meaning we are providing power out of the type-c connector), you need to provide 3.3V to the VIN_3V3 pin. The power requirements during operation are found in this table.

For a "minimum circuit", you could possibly only have a DC/DC, the PD, and some protection devices. If you plan on using the Super speed usb-c lines, you would also need a superspeed mux. If you want to load a separate custom configuration, you would need and EC or a SPI Flash memory device.

    3. What power source is required to work the TPS 65987? (ex. VCC, CC, VBUS, PP_HV, GPIO(3EA)

The PD controller is powered from the VIN3V3 pin during operation as a source. If you are operating as a sink, you can also obtain power in "dead battery mode" from the VBUS line, but that is handled internally. There is more information in the datasheet about "dead battery mode"

4.What is the sequence of motion of TPS65987?

I'm not sure what you mean by sequence of motion. The TPS65987 is USB-IF compliant and follows the routine defined by the USB-PD specification that can be found at the USB-IF site.

    5. What device do I need to download the program of TPS65987?

The GUI provided on the TPS65987 Page(https://www.ti.com/product/TPS65987D) supports only the D/DH variant. (TPS65987D/DH). It does not support the DJ or DK variants.

    Thanks and Regards,

    Chris
