USB-PD-CHG-EVM-01: High Power USB-C Power Path charging IC for 5s Lion Battery Pack Suggestion

Part Number: USB-PD-CHG-EVM-01
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ25730, TPS25750, LM5155, LM5156

Hi TI experts,

I am designing a device that run off a 5 to 6 cells of Lion 18650 batteries (18-21.6v 2600mah per cell). I am looking into using USB-C interface (20v 5A 100w) to power the load as well as charging the batteries. And I found this evaluation board from TI, USB-PD-CHG-EVM-01. It seems like what I need but only support up to 4 cells. Do you have a updated design on this with higher cell number support? And if not, is there any DC/DC boost converter recommended for boosting the output load voltage to 54v?

A few specifications regarding my design:

  • Max output power 100w
  • Max input power 100w
  • Battery: 5-6s Lion 18650 batteries (18-21.6v 2600mah per cell)
  • Power Path for charging while using
  • USB-C charger: 100w 20v 5A
  • Battery could power the system without having a USB-C charger plugged in (Is this the OTG function? Correct me if I am wrong.)

Kind regards,

Roy

  • Hi Roy,

Unfortunately, we do not have such a reference design.  We have a 5 cell buck-boost charge controller with external FETs, BQ25730.  In theory, firmware could written to control the BQ25730.  The BQ25730 could then charger the 5 cells in forward/charge mode or provide power to its input pins (USB-C port) while running in OTG/reverse mode.  The TPS25750 team would have to help with the firmware.

I am not familiar with the boost converter portfolio so I will move this thread to that team.

    Regards,

    Jeff

  • Hi Roy,

If you consider boost 21.6V to 54V/100W, you may consider LM5155/LM5156.

Please feel free to reach out if you have further request.
