BQ40Z50-R2: The behavior of Cell Balancing Permanent Fail

Part Number: BQ40Z50-R2

Hi Team,

Based on teh other E2E thread(here), I know the behavior of Cell Balancing Permanent Fail will be the following:

If set the parameters as the following:

CB:Max Threshold >>>>> 240hrs

CB:Delta Threshold>>>>> 40 hrs

CB:Delay>>>>> 2 cycles

Then the gauge is to trip PF in two conditions:

  • Condition-1: 40 Hr difference between any two cells for two cycles (Qmax update required)
  • Concition-2: Any cell exceeds 240 Hrs of balancing

But I would like to make sure about condition-1, dose these two cycles have to be continous cycles or any two cycles?

  • Hello Cheer,

This check should be two continuous cycles, not two total cycles at any point.

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller

  • Hi Wyatt,

Thanks for your confirmation. As I know, the CB Time is possibly calculated to 0 when charging(if CB only enables in Rest). Not sure if any conditions will recount CB:Delay. Will the following case still enter PF?

    • Set the parameters as the following:

    CB:Max Threshold >>>>> 240hrs

    CB:Delta Threshold>>>>> 40 hrs

    CB:Delay>>>>> 2 cycles

    • Case:

Step1. QMax Cycle Count=1, in rest mode, max delta CB Time =45hrs

Step2. QMax Cycle Count=1, in charge mode, max delta CB Time becomes =0hrs

Step3. The battery executes the full learning and QMax Cycle Count becomes 2

Step4. QMax Cycle Count=2, in rest mode, max delta CB Time=48hrs, will the gauge enter PF?

  • Hello Cheer,

No the gauge must have two cycles, if you start at Qmax Cycle Count = 1 then it will not trigger until Qmax Cycle Count = 3.

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller

  • HI Waytt,

Thanks. Just would to make sure my understand is correct.

Step1. QMax Cycle Count=1, in rest mode, max delta CB Time =45hrs

Step2. QMax Cycle Count=1, in charge mode, max delta CB Time becomes =0hrs

Step3. The battery executes the full learning and QMax Cycle Count becomes 2

Step4. QMax Cycle Count=2, in rest mode, max delta CB Time=48hrs

Step5. QMax Cycle Count=2, in charge mode, max delta CB Time becomes =0hrs

Step6. The battery executes the full learning and QMax Cycle Count becomes 3

Step7. QMax Cycle Count=3, in rest mode, max delta CB Time=48hrs, >>> Here, the gauge enters PF, right?

Is any conditions the gauge will reset the count of CB:Delay?

  • Hello Cheer,

I believe the gauge just directly compares the Qmax Cycle Count with the threshold for CB:Delay, if the CB time delta is large continuously for those two cycle increments then the protection sets.

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller
