TPS65987D: TPS65987D

Part Number: TPS65987D
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65987, TPS65981, TPS65994AD, TPS25750, TPS65994, TPS25750EVM

Hello,

For TPS65987 USB PD Controller; Operating ambient temperature is  looking –10°C - +125°C . But we need -36°C operating temperature for our costumer. We designed devices with TPS65987 for our costumer. Although TPS65987 is a newer version of TPS65981; TPS65981 operating ambient temperature is looking -40°C. Why?  Can we force the device to lower operating temperatures?  Or can you suggest a lower temperature version of TPS65987?

Thank you

Şahin

  • Hi Sahin,

Let me check internally if there are any parts that can support this temperature.

From my understanding, we have not tested down to -40C with the TPS65987 as it was not a priority and we did not expect many use cases for those temperatures.

The rated temperature found in the datasheet is what we guarantee as an operating range, if you decide to force the device to lower temperatures we can not guarantee proper operation.

    Thanks and Regards,

    Chris

  • Hi Sahin,

The TPS25750 and TPS65994AD parts are operable down to -40C.

They are both PD controllers, and the TPS25750 has a much simpler GUI but also has less configurability.

    Thanks and Regards,

    Chris

  • Hi Chris,

    Can I use TPS25750 for 20V 5A (100W) Souurce and 20V 5A  (Sink) PD operation ? in the datasheet TPS25750 has 20v 3A integrated source switch.

    Thanks,

    Şahin

  • Hi Sahin,

TPS25750 has the capability to sink and source up to 100W, if you're using the 'D" variant, the internal power path has an absolute maximum of 28V/7A, however we highly recommend to keep it within the recommended operating range of 22V/7A (refer to the datasheet for more details).

Do note TPS25750 does not support alternate mode such as DisplayPort, Thunderbolt, etc. If you're looking for a PD that support these features as well as the operable temperature requirement, I would recommend taking a look at the TPS65994 as Chris mentioned.

    Thanks and Regards,

    Raymond Lin

  • Hi Raymond,

No, I need supported pd 3.0 specs, maximum provided 20V 5A  a source power delivery and -40 operating temperature. totaly 100w source pd device that I will design.  When I saw your Tps25750evm, its looking for 60W source. Why?  Can I use tps25750 for all this specs?

    Thanks

  • Hi Sahin,

When I saw your Tps25750evm, its looking for 60W source. Why?  Can I use tps25750 for all this specs?

This is an EVM limitation. One of the DC-DC converters supplying source power bottlenecks the EVM at 60W. The TPS25750 will support 20V/5A Source/Sink.

Are there any specific PD 3.0 specs that you need? Like Raymond mentioned, the TPS25750 does not support alternate modes. There may be other features that are not supported.

    Thanks and Regards,

    Chris
