Hi Team,

1. Could the SMBus communication of bq40Z50 be compatible with I2C?

2. Could I connect it to the I2C pins of MCU and use it in this way? If not, how could I solve this issue?

Hello Katherine,

SMBus has more timing/timeout requirements than I2C. SMBus can also use PEC but since PEC is optional you can skip it.

If you have a microcontroller with an I2C engine, it is possible to add additional code to implement SMBus. For the most common commands, basic I2C can also work fine but you may have to add more retries on error.

Hi Shirish,

For CPU, it only supports 12C and doesn't support SMBus.

Do you mean that the cpu side is controlled by i2c and does not support SMBus, and thus the basic i2c can also be accessed theoretically? Did I understand it correctly?

It depends on the capabilities of the MCU. Most MCUs that implement I2C can also support SMBus.

Is the bq40Z50r1 SMBus clock frequency only up to 100kHz? What does Section 7.34 SMBus XL in the manuals mean? Thank you in advance.

Hello Katherine,

The normal mode of operation is upto 100KHz. Setting the XL bit will allow upto 400KHz
