BQ34Z100-R2: Is BQ34Z100-R2 capable of being used as a system-side gauge?

Hi Team,

Is BQ34Z100-R2 capable of being used as a system-side gauge where the actual battery can be removed?
I couldn't judge it from TI.com and datasheet.

    Hello Yaita-san,

    In general BQ34Z100 is a pack side gauge. However in some applications it can be used as a system side gauge. There are limitations and expect accuracy to be less for a few cycles after the gauge is reset by replacement of the battery.

    Hi Shirish-san,

    There isn't section about "Replaceable Battery Systems" in BQ34Z100-R2 datasheet.

    On the other hand, there is 8.1.4 Replaceable Battery Systems in BQ34Z100 datasheet (page 46). 
    Is it same feature between BQ34Z100 and BQ34Z100-R2?

    Hello Yaita-san,

    I am checking with our systems team on this. I would expect R2 to support it as well.

    Note that a true system side gauge will tolerate removable batteries that may be charged outside the system which the bq34z100 family of gauges does not support. Whereas "replacement" is a rare occurrence as in where the battery is replaced when it becomes old and otherwise is always connected to the system.

    Hello Yaita-san,

    The systems team confirmed that R2 can be used in similar way. However the new recommendation is to use it on pack side. 

    The explanation given is that the datasheet description is a little bit too simple. There are more factors that sometimes make it challenging to use bq34z100 on system side, therefore it was removed in the newer versions. We do not recommend using bq34z100 on system side.

    Hi Shirish-san,

    I understand BQ34Z100 and BQ34Z100-G1, BQ34Z100-R2 aren't recommended on system side.
    If so, which gas gauge product is recommended for 2-cell series Li-ion battery on system side?
    How about BQ34110?

    Hello Yaita-san,

    System side is usually only available for single cell applications.

    The bq34110 is for rarely discharged battery applications.
