Charger IC for 3 cell Li-Po battery pack with BQ78LP116 gas gauge

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ78PL116, BQ24707A, BQ24747, BQ24765, BQ24610, BQ24133

Would you please to recommend, which charger IC I can use in order to charge the battery pack built with BQ78PL116 gas gauge chip?

I do not want to use any microcontrollers, so the best is direct communication via SMB Bus.

  • The SMbus charger IC: bq24747, bq24765, bq24707A.

    The stand alone IC:bq24610, bq24133, bq2417x.

Why do you have to use a SMbus charger IC? Does bq78PL116 support boardcast mode (send out ChargeVoltage and ChargeCurrent commands)?

  • The BQ78PL116 does not support broadcasting - i.e. I can not use the SMbus charger IC that you propose.

The exact reasson why I am asking - do you estimate any problems with Stand Alone chargers - in this case nobody reads the BQ78LP116 requirements of Charge Voltage and Charge Current... How the staff works in such case?

  • The stand alone IC doesn't need SMbus to set the charge voltage; charge current.... For example: bq246xx: ISET1 sets the fast charger current; ISET2 sets the pre-charge current and termination current; VLOWV sets the pre-charge voltage threshold; TTC sets the safety timer; VFB resistor divider sets the charge voltage; ACSET sets the input current limit. STAT pins and PG pin report the charging status.
