BQ40Z80: RE: Feature overlap

Dear Sir/Ma'am,

We are looking for the battery gauge chips so we finalize Bq40z80 chip.

So I have one doubt with that, the BQ40Z80 supports the overvoltage protection but in its reference design for overvoltage protection BQ7718 series chip is used.

If the Bq40Z80 have the cell overvoltage protection feature then why separate over voltage protection chip is used? Also if we not use the Bq7718 chip with Bq40z80 can have overvoltage protection feature?

Please help us with that

    Hello Hrishikesh,

    Since safety is very critical for Lithium ion batteries, there are usually 2 levels of protection used. bq7718 is a second level protector that will trigger in case bq40z80 does not take action because it is configured incorrectly.
