BQ78PL116: BQ78PL116 status still NRND?

Part Number: BQ78PL116
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: GPCCHEM, BQWIZARD, BQSTUDIO

Hello

We are utilizing the BQ78PL116 since 2011.
Support ended a couple of years ago because the status of the device was set to NRND.
Now our Liion cell is discontinued and we need to replace it.
Now we are wondering if we have to replace a functioning BMS as well. The produkt page does not mention the NRND status as it did some time ago.
What happend? Status change back to normal or is it website error?

Thanks and best regards
Markus

  • Hi Markus,

The NRND designation was removed on many products because it was causing concern for many customers who were afraid that TI would no longer produce certain products. So the NRND designation is not as commonly used anymore unless there is a stronger reason. This product is still in production and if your are familiar with it, then there might not be any reason to change devices. However, if there is significant support needed, it is not the best device to select since the product is very old and the engineers familiar with the device are no longer around, so support will be limited.

    Best regards,

    Matt

  • Hey Matt,
    Thanks for the quick reply!
Ok, I understand that, it caused concern by me as well ;-)

    Now I have two questions:

Can you provide an EOL date for the chipset?
    and
Is there any chance to get my hands on a chem file for the SDI INR18650-35E cell?

    Thanks!
    Markus

  • Hello Markus,

TI does not stop production unless there are no more customers purchasing the parts, so I am not aware of any plans to EOL.

Are you able to get the files from the chemistry updater page? You should be able to download the latest chem IDs there. We do not have chem IDs for all batteries so you may need to use GPCCHEM tool to find the best match.

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller

  • Hi Wyatt,

Thanks for your reply! But it confuses me!
As far as I understand the available newer chemistry files cannot be used with older gauges like the BQ78PL116. That's why I'm asking for a lagacy file ;-)
But I could be wrong, maybe you can say something about that?
I'm not familiar with tools like bqstudio because our product is old and needs bqWizard for maintainance. Therefore I don't know how to get files from the chemistry updater page.

    Sincerely,
    Markus

  • Hello Markus,

I don't believe there is a method to update the chemistry data for this gauge. When we NRND a part it essentially indicates we can no longer provide effective support due to the age of the part or other reason - we still sell the part if it is used in legacy designs that have already been configured, but we are not updating any of the tools to support new development.

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller

  • Hi Wyatt,
    Ok, I understand that.
But it would be great if there was a zip file with all chem files ever created for this IC as a download.
That would give users like me at least the opportunity to help themselves.
    Just an idea...

    Sincerly,
    Markus

  • Hello Markus,

The installation should've had all the .chem files with it, you shouldn't need to download them separately. You should be able to switch between the existing chem IDs in the BQWizard GUI.

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller

  • Hi!

    Well, that's not completly true...

    Look at that:
New Chem File for SDI ICR18650-22P

But ok, I guess this leads to nothing.
    Thanks for your time!

    Best regards
    Markus
