LM61440-Q1: output capacitor

Part Number: LM61440-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM61440

Dear expert,

Customer use LM61440 for both 2.1MHz and 400KHz case.

TI recommend 3*22uF capacitors for 400KHz which is too big form them. They want to know whether they can change them to 2*10uF capacitor?

Thanks

  • Hi,

Assuming it is the same output voltage, customer can't use the same output capacitance solution for two completely different switching frequencies because stability is impacted by the switching frequency and output capacitance.  Table 10-2 provides guidance for the typical component values of common applications.

Changing from 3 x 22uF to 2 *10uF will impact the system's phase margin stability and impact overall design robustness. As such it is suggested to follow the table recommendations. If they want to lower the component count then they can go from 3 * 22uF to 2 * 47uF, but I do not suggest lowering overall capacitance.

    Regards,

    Jimmy
