TPS65982: work with TPS65981

I need some additional information to assist me with this issue. What GUI are you using and what is the Firmware version? (see highlighted in the image below for reference)
Also, could you provide the project file, binary file, and PD logs? Thank you for your patience.

Hi Aya,

"GUI" do you mean TPS659xx Application Customization Tool "GUI Build Version"? If it is, the version I installed on my computer is 6.1.3. I have tried using it in following steps:1. New Project: select device(I choose TPS65982)-->Standard-->Thunderbold(none)-->DRP,prefer power source ; the firmware base image version is 0001.12.11    2. Under "Project“ menu, import settings from Project, I imported the *.pjt file genetated before(maybe 2 years before, not by me)    3. Under "Binary" menu, choose“Flash from current project”, the firmware is witten into the flash.

I also tried a different way, after import settings from Project, choose "Change File" under Firmware Base Image, I changed the default TPS65981_2_6_v0001_12_11.bin to old low-region binary file generated before(the firmware base image version is 0001.12.07); then save the binary file and write it into board flash.

I'm not able to upload the binary file, maybe the file is too small or some other reason.

I don't know how I can see the PD logs?

Hi Stephen, 

At this point I would recommend generating a new project from scratch using the 6.1.3 GUI instead of importing the older file. You can follow the same steps you mentioned in step 1. There may be issues when importing a project from one generation to the next.  Also, you can see the PD logs by using a PD analyzer. I have tried starting a new project and generate firmware from scratch, but the result is same as before.

Did you have ever used TPS65982 and 981 together? Or do you have ever encountered some similar problems?

Does it mean these 2 chips USB-PD Phy isn't compatible with each other?

I tried using the TPS65982 and 981 together and I did encounter some problems as well. They are both older devices so that may cause more issues for you later in your project as well. We have sold many products with TPS65981 inside to our customers. we would like our replacement design be compatible with the old one. Can TPS65987 be 100% compatible with TPS65981?

I'm a little confused about this issue. If TPS65982 and TPS65981 both comply with the USB PD specification, they should work with each other without problems. What's root cause of this problem? Can we solve this if we dig a little bit deeper?

I understand your confusion. The TPS65981 and 982 both adhere to the USB PD 2.0 specification which we no longer support. Therefore, we unfortunately cannot assist with bug fixes for those devices. The TPS65987 should be compatible in your redesign, but I will look into it further and get back to you by the end of the week.
