TPS1HA08-Q1: How to disable or not enable watchdog feature

Part Number: TPS1HA08-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS3305

My two questions are about the differences between version A and version E of the device

We have an existing circuit whose design includes version A — so, the full device number is TPS1HA08A-Q1.

We wish to purchase 105 pieces of version A, however, it is on long-lead-time back-order at both Mouser and Digi-Key, 26 weeks and 119 weeks, respectively.

Digi-Key’s website offers that version E is a suitable substitute for version A.

In the T.I. product literature (tps1ha08-q1.pdf), the only difference between A and E that we can find is that E incorporates an optional watchdog feature.

Our two questions then are:

1. Is the watchdog feature the only difference between version A and version E?

2. If yes, can the watchdog feature on version E be disabled (or not enabled) such that version E can be a suitable drop-in replacement for version A? -- and what steps should be taken to accomplish that?

Thank you.

  • Jules,

Functionally as far as spec/ratings the devices are the same, however there is no way to disable the watchdog feature on the E version. You would have to modify your software on your microcontroller or on your system to PWM the enable pin to allow for the watchdog not to expire.

  • Thank you Timothy. However, in the navigation pane on the right I found a similar topic, “TPS3305. how to disable Watchdog feature” which references the T.I. document “slva145: Disabling the Watchdog Timer for TI’s Family of Supervisors.” My question then is, does that document apply to this particular high-side switch?

  • It does not apply to the TPS1H1A08-Q1. They are completely separate devices/architectures. Glancing at it, it looks like TPS3305 has a dedicated watchdog pin that allows this to be possible, however our high-side switches are different architectures so it is not comparable to supervisors.
