BQ76942: random connection question

Part Number: BQ76942

Hi team,

Could you please help to explain what abnormal symptoms will happen if customer connect the cells in random sequence under the condition of VC0 is not connected through the series resistor to VSS? Thanks!

  • Hello Zhihao,

Although the BQ76942 supports random cell connections, there are some restrictions. One restriction is VC1-VC0 connection. The lowest cell must be connected between VC1 and VC0. One of the reasons is because the VC0 pin has a lower voltage tolerance since this pin was designed to be connected through the series cell input resistor to the VSS pin on the PCB (the VC0 connection to VSS ensures random cell sequence connections).

Please see this FAQ for battery cells connection.

    Regards,
    Jose Couso

  • Hi Jose,

I don't know if I understand correctly, as long as the customer connects the VC0 pin to the ground on their PCB, the cells can be connected randomly without first grounding the negative pole of cell1, right?

  • Hello Zhihao,

As stated in datasheet and the above shared FAQ, there are restrictions when connecting cells randomly. The lowest cell should be connected between Cell-1 and Cell-0.

Please see below, the red shows the restrictions.

    Basically the pins: VC0, VC1, VC2, VC15, and VC16 require a cell attached.

    Regards,
    Jose Couso
