BQ2980: Stacking BS2980

Part Number: BQ2980

I've seen several places where it said that this part may not be suitable for stacking but no definitive explanation on the forum or in the datasheet.

Can this part be stacked? If not, why, and is there a workaround?

I need a 2S OCP solution.

Thanks

  • Hello Zijws,

The BQ2980 was not made with stacking in mind and a stacking interface was not implemented.

The biggest challenge with stacking these is that the device uses high-side drivers, so the driver outputs are usually at the supply voltage + 10-V or so.

Which may mean you would need to use additional circuitry to make it work in a stacked design. This is because you will have two different DSG and CHG drivers. You would need to level shift these signals and AND them together to interface together. This may not be possible or easily implemented using a high-side configuration. We have not tested any configuration like this.

If you wanted to stack the device you would have to level shift the signal of both the top device and bottom device into a low-side driver in order to use low-side FETs. This may be a bit easier to implement, but again, you would need to level shift the signals and use a low-side driver, which would further complicate the design. We have no examples or recommendations in achieving this.

Unfortunately we do not currently have a 2s device that has OCP. Although in the future we may have this.

    Best Regards,
