BQ24103A Design help

Hello!

Have anyone used BQ24103A for Li-Ion battery charge?

I make prototype of Li-Ion battery charger, but I have one problems. After power on LED power good switch on, after connect battery device doesn't start charge. I measured all voltage in my prototype and in evalution module BQ24103AEVM, all voltage are even, but my prototype doesn't charge battery.

Did anyone have such problem?

    Hi Nikita,

     

    Did you follow the system design specification of the datasheet on page 23?

    What is different from your design and EVM design? Is it possible to send a schematic of your prototype?

    In meanwhile, can you please describe your issue in details? Like, the sequencing in which you powering up the charger, the state of the STAT1 and 2 pins. Is your battery detected? Is your CE enabled?

    Hi Tahar,

    I  have sent to you schematic and PCB. In my prototype CE is enabled, pin TTC have state 0.7V, pin VTSB have state 3.1V. After connect battery STAT1 and STAT2 have states 0V.

    Hi,

     

    When you say STAT1 &2 is 0V, I understand that STAT1=ON and STAT2=ON. Based on the table1 &2 on the datasheet, this not a defined state.

     

    Also in your schematic you have both the Power Ground and the Analog ground the same. Other than this I do not see anything wrong with your schematic.

     

    I am suspecting that there is a battery absent issue, but not sure. What is the voltage measured at Vbat pin as you plug in the battery?  For the absent battery condition, typically the voltage on the BAT pin rises and falls between 0V and VOVP thresholds.

    Hi Tahar,

     

    The voltage at Vbat pins is 7.4V as I plug in the battery. With absent battery voltage on the BAT pins rises and falls between 0V and 8.6V, the same as at EVM board.

    I found one different between my prototype and EVM board: if I remove L1 voltage at out pins of IC is 2.7V on the EVM and is 0.8V on the my prototype.

    The others voltage are the same as EVM.

    Hi Nikita,

     

    Based on your description, it sounds like the charger enters the battery absent mode as described in data sheet on page 19. BUT the STAT1 should be OFF and STAT2 should be OFF for this mode.

     

    Did you try charging your battery using our EVM? Does it work with our EVM? Please confirm, I am trying to see if the issue is coming from you prototype only or both.  

     

    If our EVM does not work, then most likely the problem is in either:

    • The protection circuitry in your battery is interfering the proper operation of the IC.
    • OR, you have issues with your input power supply.

     

     Can you send me scope capture of VIN, VCC, VBAT, STAT1, STAT2, OUT, CELL pins for both your circuit and our EVM.    

     

    I would also try to charge up the battery using a sample lab power supply and see if the battery can be rechargeable at all.

     

    Also change the battery

     

    Also try to play with your input voltage levels. Make them higher or lower. Make sure there is no phase difference or delays between the IN and VCC pin.

    Yes, my protorype enters the battery absent mode. When I connect battery STAT1 and STAT2 off.

    I did EVM for charge my battery, EVM works correct.

    I will try make scope copy and send to you.

     Scope pictures will be helpful, but having both STAT 1 & 2 off at the same time is strange, because it is not a defined state. But at least we are sure that the protective circuitry of your battery is not causing the problem.

    Hi Nikita,

    Yes, based on your scopes, your prototype is not able to detect the battery. For the absent battery condition, typically the voltage on the BAT pin rises and falls between 0V and VOVP thresholds. The detection routine is well described on page 19 in the datasheet. Also, make sure that the inductor, Cout and the Rses are not causing the failure on detecting the battery by the IC. The other thing that I can think of is the TS pin. As far as functionality, one can use a resistor bias to hold the TS voltage in the normal range and then the IC should have no temperature faults.  Measure the voltages on the TS pin and make sure it is in the valid range..

    Hi Tahar,

     

    I checked voltage at TS pin, in my prototype this voltage in the valid range and the same as at EVM.

    Maybe you can offer any other variants of Li-Ion charger. I need charger for 2 series sells, capacity 1800mA*h.

    Hi Nikita,  

     

    I do not think the charger is the problem, because if the battery is present, the charger won’t behave as you described.

     

    Can you try the following?

     

    • Measure the cells voltage of the battery  
    • Try to charge up the battery using the power supply
    • Can you try a different battery?

     

    Basically make sure that the protection of the battery is not shutting down the battery terminals as you plug it to the charger. See the attachment for other options. Can you share the volume of this project?

    Voltage of the battery is 7.4V;

    I tryed charge the battery from power supply, power supply charges the battery;

    I tryed several different batteries;

    I tryed charge the battery without the protection, result was the same.

    I am having a similar issue.  Any update on the design?    Here is my schematic for a test board.   My battery pack is 2x 18650 in series  (7.4V).     The BQ24103A will not start up.    It will detect missing battery by raising the voltage to 8.6V for few millisec and then dropping back down to 0.4V (repeating).   

    I have tried changing RT1 to 5K, RT2 to 10K , tried putting VTSB directly into TS with no luck.    I am at lost on what the issue might be.

    Hi Don,

    Could you provide mode failure situation when the charging is abnormal?
    If there is no misunderstanding, charging is not working at your design. After power-on, it would remain in Battery Detection logic and cannot go out even the battery is present. Please let me know if anything is wrong.
